With the advent of the iPhone, multi-touch gestural mobile device interactions have entered the mainstream of consumer electronics and the popular imagination. As with many innovations, however, the initial sense of "a new paradigm" is almost certainly exaggerated. In our workshop we'll begin by sketching out the historical context of interactive modalities for this latest form of commercially successful human-computer interaction and describe some of the challenges this innovation presents designers as well as end users. Using paper-prototype design and evaluation activities, weʼll explore, together with the workshop participants, some of the potential strengths and weaknesses of this novel form of interaction.
Workshop participants should expect to gain:
- a better understanding of where multi-touch gestural interactions fit among the array of ways that they can interact with contemporary communication devices
- a hands-on appreciation for the power of paper-prototypes in exploring the dynamicsof interactions with high-tech devices
